Mit etwa 0,9 % Kohlenstoff, 18 % Chrom, 1 % Molybdän, 0,1 % Vanadium und 0,3 % Kobalt bietet er eine ausgewogene Kombination aus Korrosionsbeständigkeit, Zähigkeit und Schnitthaltigkeit. Gleichzeitig lässt sich AR-RPM9 vergleichsweise einfach nachschärfen. Damit eignet sich der Stahl besonders gut für EDC- und Gebrauchsmesser, bei denen zuverlässige Leistung und unkomplizierte Pflege im Vordergrund stehen.
