Kanetsune Seki

Safety Instructions for Axes and Hatchets

Axes and hatchets are sharp tools intended for working with wood and for other tasks specified by the manufacturer. Improper use can cause serious injury. Please observe the following safety instructions:

  1. Warning – sharp cutting edge: The cutting edge can cause serious injury. Always handle, use and clean the tool with care.

  2. Use only as intended: Use the axe or hatchet only for suitable tasks, such as chopping or splitting wood. Do not strike stone, metal or other unsuitable materials with the cutting edge. Use the back of the axe head as a hammer only if the manufacturer expressly permits it.

  3. Keep away from children: Store axes and hatchets securely, out of the reach of children and unauthorised persons. They are not toys.

  4. Wear protective equipment: Wear safety glasses and sturdy footwear when working. Use suitable gloves that provide a secure grip where appropriate.

  5. Safe storage and transport: Cover the cutting edge with a suitable guard or sheath when the tool is not in use. Secure the tool during transport to prevent it from shifting or being accessed unintentionally.

  6. Inspect before use: Before each use, check that the axe head is firmly attached and that the handle and cutting edge are undamaged. Do not use an axe or hatchet with a loose head, damaged handle or any other visible defect. Keep the cutting edge clean and sharpen it properly when necessary.

  7. Check the work area: Maintain a stable stance and allow enough room for the swing. Keep people and animals away from the work area. Make sure that flying wood chips or pieces of wood cannot strike anyone.

  8. Observe applicable laws: Check the local rules on carrying and transporting axes and hatchets. Their use as tools does not automatically permit them to be carried everywhere.

Warning: Improper handling of axes and hatchets can cause serious injury. Use the tool responsibly and only for its intended purpose.
